DrySel - Dryer Selection
This dryer selection expert system lists and compares the many
options for over 50 different types of dryer to perform a chosen
drying duty. DrySel can provide you a clear picture of the range of
promising dryers and their advantages and disadvantages,
recognizing that in reality a dryer selection decision is rarely
clear-cut.
It is partly based on expert system principles, but also
contains significant numerical calculation sections. The aim is to
provide a clear picture of the range of promising dryers and their
advantages and disadvantages. The input data is extensive but can
be held on a single file, which automatically calls up files for
solids properties and drying kinetics which are shared with other
Process Tools. Major choices are then addressed; batch or
continuous mode, contact or convective heating, basic type of feed
and options for feed or product modification. In each case, the
program tells the user what factors should be considered when
making the choice, and offers advice. The user may keep all options
open or concentrate on a selection. Next, the program evaluates the
overall merit factors for the selected dryers, based on over 50
rules covering material properties, specified throughput and
moisture content, safety and environmental factors.
The output data is extensive and a number of options are
provided for display. Dryers may be ranked in order of merit score,
and both graphical and numerical display is provided. Individual
dryers, merit scores and selection rules may be viewed. An
approximate sizing and costing of selected dryers is also
provided.
