Integration between Aspen Basic Engineering and Intergraph SmartPlant
Ensuring a smooth, efficient handover from FEED to detailed engineering
For many users of aspenONE® Engineering, the suite of Aspen products is a strategic solution set for conceptual and basic engineering, and Intergraph SmartPlant is a strategic solution set for detailed engineering.
Typical needs for information transfer include:
- Making datasheets (process, mechanical, instrumentation) developed in Aspen Basic Engineering available to the detailed designer
- Making equipment lists and line lists available to estimating, mechanical design, and procurement
- Managing plant breakdown structure centrally and delivering it to all design tools
- Delivering pipeline topology, design intent, and proposed pipe specs to the piping designer
- Delivering the preliminary P&ID from FEED to detailed design
- Delivering the PFD of record to the project manager and client
Companies face increasing pressure to improve productivity and compress project schedules. Aspen Basic Engineering is proven on world-scale projects to deliver basic engineering packages faster and with fewer resources, promote agility, and integrate global design teams. Aspen Basic Engineering is a core element of AspenTech’s aspenONE Engineering applications.
To support these types of information needs, AspenTech offers an adaptor to SmartPlant Foundation which enables publishing of Aspen Basic Engineering deliverables to SmartPlant Foundation and conversely retrieval of certain SmartPlant deliverables by Aspen Basic Engineering. This adapter includes a core data mapping between the Aspen Basic Engineering and SmartPlant Foundation data models. The information integration scope is shown in the accompanying table. (A full listing of the attributes moved between the systems is available in the ABE help file ZyTEF.chm.)

This integration toolset has been successfully implemented at a number of major EPC and owner operator clients who use both Aspen Basic Engineering and SmartPlant.
Typically the implementation process involves:
- Assessing the FEED to detailed engineering workflow, including flow of both documents and data
- Defining the appropriate deliverables and data to be handed over
- Implementing the software configurations and data mappings specific to a company's engineering methods and chemical processes
Third parties who are knowledgeable in executing the implementation of integration between ABE and Intergraph SmartPlant include:
